About Derl Horn

 

Derl Horn, a Marine in the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, “The Walking Dead,” has written his memoirs about his service with the Marines Corps in Cuba and Vietnam. 

He was trained at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA with Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Pendleton, CA. 

As a Lance Corporal, Derl and twenty-five other young Marines from Bravo company survived a U-shaped ambush on July 2, 1967 during Operation Buffalo, north of the DMZ in Vietnam.

His company was outnumbered by the North Vietnam Army Regiment. Derl received a Purple Heart and Combat Action Medals for his actions and wounds received during the battle and a Presidential Unit Citation. 

     Derl and his wife of 50 years, Marilyn, live in Springdale, Arkansas, where they enjoy their three children and five grandchildren.
